Top cities to visit in Alaska

We get a lot of requests for first-time visits to Alaska and just about every conversation starts off just about the same way, “Where should I visit in Alaska and for how long?”

Alaska is a very large state, and many locations are very remote. However, there are plenty of "easy-to-get-to" cities and towns that we always recommend for first-time visitors. We recommend at least eight to ten days to get a good overview trip.

Here are the cities we should consider for your first trip:

1. Anchorage - Surrounded by mountains and national parks and filled with plenty of wildlife, Anchorage is a good start for your visit. Many tours and activities you can experience start in this city. With cruise ports not too far away, you will also likely encounter many visitors who are either getting off an Alaskan cruise or about to board one.

2. Seward. Approximately 120 miles (or 2 and half hours) south of Anchorage is Seward. In this bustling small town, you can experience outdoor adventure in the national parks that feature wildlife and glaciers. Be sure to catch the Alaskan Railroad for great views as you sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride.

3. Denali. Consider spending a few days in Denali National Park at one of the wilderness lodges. This is a great location to spend time relaxing or going for hikes. You can even participate in wildlife and tundra tours. If you want to see Denali from the air, there are even flightseeing tour options available. Don’t forget to take the dome rail service to Denali for 360-degree views on the ride up.

4. Fairbanks. Known for first-class accommodations and restaurants in addition to museums, concerts, historical sites, and culture, Fairbanks is a great city to end your trip in. With its long summer days, you have nearly endless days of sun. While you are here, don’t forget to check out the northern lights, as this is the best city to experience this mystical light show from.

There are certainly more cities and towns to include in your itinerary. So, let’s schedule a consultation call today and plan your trip to Alaska!
